Who will pay for your wedding? In many Nigerian families, the parents of the bride and groom foot the bill for most of the wedding expenses. But some couples and cultures choose to split the cost in different ways. Sometimes the bride's family is responsible for one day, while the groom's family pays for another.

Nigerian weddings are all-out affairs, bursting with food, music, colour and dancing. Many couples have two weddings - a cultural ceremony, followed by a more Western-style day - so there's plenty of opportunity to celebrate.

Depending on which side of the family you are from, you will be asked to wear Aso-Ebi, or “Family Clothes” for the bride and groom. Typically members of the family decide what colors and fabrics (since most clothes for the wedding are custom-made or made by someone the bride and groom know) the guests will wear.

At a Nigerian couple's reception, there will always be food and drinks are typically served to the guests. This can take the form of a sit-down dinner with a set menu, or it can be a more casual affair with a variety of food stations or a buffet.
